Life, well gets in the way.. some days, are nights, and some nights, turn into days. And some ways, I don't know which is which..
I wanted to share my friend, Diane M Jordan's quilting/ fabric website with those of you who sew, or who know quilting friends who might be interested in checking it out.
Diane has some awesome fabric, and sales every week, found at www.djsdiscountfabrics.com, and as she was part of a group of quilting friends all over the country, I was blessed to be able to find out the awesome part of Diane's heart as a quilter as they all graciously sent a box , or two! of fabrics, batting and such to help in the baby donation charity work I do here in my small town.
Diane was part of this group of gals, who have so inspired me to keep learning about what it means to be a quilter , and I am so glad I can find a way to steer others who sew, towards Diane's website above..
The reason I am wanting to bless Diane with this note, is because of a testimonial of sorts at the quality of the fabric she sells. Its name brands, that anyone in the " know , and sew" of quilting would totally recognize. The quality of the fabric, whether its the yardage Diane sells, or the scrap bundles ( which I LOVE LOVE LOVE ) , is high end , and I have made many a scrap quilt already with the orders I have purchased the last few months. I just love sewing with quality materials such as what Diane sells on her website..

Truth is, I was so impressed by the quality, and speed of mailing Diane does all on her own, I made an additional order even though it was not in my budget that month. But I just " had to have it " , as we all know about quilters , and their fabric stashes.. Never mind , that mine is pretty much on empty right now though..
But I ended up buying, and blessing babies from Diane's fabric scrap bundles and that just tickled my fancy.. besides, they were cheaper than some I looked at on other websites, or Ebay .

But I sensed a little discouragement from Diane today in our emails.. She is such an inspiration to me, and I want to just see what I can do to maybe move people her direction , ya know?
Shes got the great weekly Wed. deals that I am always looking forward too, but more than that, she's got a heart to sell at affordable, and discounted prices for those of us who need to feed our addiction.

But shes also got a heart to bless those of us who can't go out and pay quilt store costs for the things that it takes to create beautiful quilts as we do. I know I can't, and this is why I keep Diane's website on my favorites page so I know where to go when I can purchase things I like, or need again.
One thing I do know is this.. from what I have bought from Diane's online store, there are babies here in my community that have quilts that were made by me, using much of Diane's scrap bundles which I have purchased, as well as patterns I have purchased from her website. I love to know that somewhere in some crib, or bassinet, or stroller are quilts that I have been able to make, and donate to the pregnancy center here, and knowing that fabric all the way from Mississippi, are part of those special heart felt treasures I have been blessed to create for babies, adopted or by birth.
Please check out Diane's website, www.djsdiscountfabrics.com if you find yourself wanting to add to your stash, or to feed your addiction like I have done ..:)karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17666861136164521960noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2567338570541070393.post-35171136045568482072012-03-05T19:18:00.000-08:002012-03-05T19:18:31.467-08:00Dawn Comes EarlyDawn Comes Early is a Brides of Last Chance Novel written by Margaret Brownley.
The story line involves Kate Tenney, the main character of the book who heads to the Arizona Territory from Boston, specifically, a large cattle ranch , after being dropped by her publisher for a banned novel that was just a tad bit "naughty".

That experience had left her disgraced in the eyes of those that she worked with, as well as a line of failed romances, for which she has decided she would never , ever be married.
Answering the ad to be “heiress” to a cattle ranch in the Arizona Territory, Kate hopes ranching turns out to be just as she wrote in her latest novel which brought her to the place where she meets, Luke Adams, whose presence stirs within Kate, feelings that she had tried to not feel - baring in mind, failed romances which she had tried to steer away from again.

Kate drew me in, as her spirit and determination to learn how to be a rancher was both bringing to light of what a spit fire she was in the story line, but also how she reminded me of myself in many ways , trying to accomplish new things that I didn't know I could do. Kate didn't give up learning about the running of a ranch, which she had no idea what it would entail, and when things seemed insurmountable, she dug her boots in, and continued on with reaching the goal, with surprises along the way - new feelings unleashed for Luke, and new dreams that seemed to break free from within her heart.
In my reviewing for Booksneeze, I have found some of the books, fact, or fiction to be either a little lightweight on the " Christian" themes , while others are so blatant " in your face, Bible thumping " that all I wanted to do is not finish reading.

Yet , "Dawn Comes Early " really wasn’t like either of those scenarios. Yes, there is religion there in the story line, but it is refreshing, and to me, thought provoking as I saw Kate in my own eyes, and could see a little of how she was changing, just from the experiences she was dealing with on the ranch.

I found this book to be quite enjoyable, at times bursting a bubble of laughter out of me,javascript:void(0) just thru her stubbornness, and the comments from one of the other characters whose " countrified terminology" really hits home, given that I live in the mountains where being a red neck doesn't mean being sunburned..

Would I recommend this book to other readers? Most certainly.. Laughter, excitement, romance, and thoughts about Jesus all wrapped up between two covers that catches the eye with soft, yet subtle colors of a ranch in the background .
I reviewed this book, for Booksneeze, for my honest reviews..karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17666861136164521960noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2567338570541070393.post-36278711128295973992012-01-14T19:22:00.000-08:002012-01-14T19:22:22.594-08:00Daily Gifts of GraceAs part of the Booksneeze program, to receive, and read books free, sometimes the hard part comes in writing an honest review of those books. Sometimes the stories, whether fiction, or not seem convoluted, scattered, and sometimes, just plain boring. I've read a few that fall into all those categories..
This book review , "Daily Gifts of Grace " ,

was a book that , though pretty, and gift oriented, fell VERY flat on the scale of a devotional book, as it is labeled.
I was saddened by some of the well meaning journal entries from many of the " Women of Faith" speakers, that the womens movement right now hear from. Some of these women, whose names are synomous with faith, seemed to have words that were so " of this world" , so " fluffy and happy " , that I could not wait to put the book aside, not to open it again. Faith is not about the happy go lucky world that some of these women seemed to talk about. Life sucks, as my friend says, Sucks eggs,. Even our faith, as God calls us to live, is not about feeling good, or having nice and pleasant experiences - yet, many of these daily entries for the year 2012 seemed to lead the reader into that feel good movement - and that is so deceptive, and so very disheartening.

"Daily Gifts of Grace", a book I received to review, and keep, was a book I have mixed emotion about, as I have read only half the book. Various Christian woman, such as Sandi Patty, Lisa Whelchel, Joni Eaarekson Tada, and Sheila Walsh among others, were good to share thoughts on matters that attempted to bring thought to a daily time of reflection as life presented itself thru their eyes.

Granted, some of these woman, from the often talked about " Women of Faith" movement, seem much more focused on what Faith is to their lives, while others seemed in this devotional book, more focused on the feel good, be happy movement that , truth be said, was pretty obvious in some of the daily writing.
The book starts with a scripture, but then the very short, and often times , very simplistic, and very worldly thoughts from some of the women, did not capture my interest , or my need to continue to read daily devotions from this " pretty" designed hardback book.

Yes, as a feel good book for a gift to a friend who is not into " religion", this would possibly fit that bill, as it is nothing more, in my opinion, than words shared on paper , where as other devotional books I have read, really provide the " meat and potato" meal that biblical thoughts, and experiences influenced from true believers have shared. This book falls short from that very " meal "..

Just going on what my spirit sensed as I read, there does not seem to be any active faith demonstrated in some of these woman's lives as they penned their thoughts, and experiences. Though there are a few very touching, and real scenarios that do bring up faith, and how God has moved in the lives of those writing as if Christ was directing their hand, most felt " put on " for the sake of a good read, and not words to uplift, or encourage others in their faith journey. I did not find myself even remotely interested in seeking God daily as I read about a quarter of the submitted daily thoughts.

As I have thought, would I buy this book, though colorful, and eye catching, knowing that many of the thoughts were to worldly, seemingly without a real commitment other than by word only, I can't say I would even think about purchasing it for myself, and probably not even as a gift.

Devotionals to me are what makes me get up in the morning, or go to bed at night, with thought in mind of how my faith can become stronger, and more meaningful to others whom I know. This is not that kind of book, sadly.. I closed the cover, and honestly, haven't had the desire to continue to read each daily offering for the 2012 new year..
I am not obligated to write a positive review of this book, or any others from the Booksneeze / Thomas Nelson reader program.karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17666861136164521960noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2567338570541070393.post-91914642902788591412011-12-03T18:21:00.000-08:002011-12-03T18:21:17.353-08:00Snicker..doodles..from the kitchenHaving been asked for this recipe for Snickerdoodle CAKE, I am sharing the recipe here for all who love the sweet, cinnamony cookie taste! Enjoy!

Snickerdoodle Cake with Brown Sugar Cinnamon Buttercream

Ingredients

For the Cake:
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups cake flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
2 sticks butter, softened to room temperature
1 3/4 cups fine or superfine sugar
4 large eggs, room temperature
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 1/4 cups whole milk, warmed to room temperature

For the Buttercream:
4 1/2 sticks butter, softened to room temperature
1 cup light brown sugar, packed
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
8-9 cups confectioner's (powdered) sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup of half and half, plus more if needed

To Bake the Cake:

Preheat oven to 325°F.

Butter and flour two 8- or 9-inch round cake pans.

In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flours, baking powder, salt and cinnamon. Set aside.

Cream together the butter and sugar until fluffy and pale in colour.

Beat the eggs in one at a time, fully incorporating each egg and scraping down the bowl between each addition. Beat in the vanilla.

Add about 1/3 of the milk, beat to incorporate, then 1/3 of the flour, again beating to incorporate.

Repeat this process, scraping down the bowl as necessary, until all of the milk and flour are added and mixed in evenly.

Divide the batter evenly between the two pans and bake, rotating midway through, for about 35 minutes or until the cake tests done.

Let the cakes cool in the pan on a rack for 5 minutes before turning out onto the racks to finish cooling.

To Make the Buttercream:

Beat together the butter, brown sugar and cinnamon until fluffy and pale in colour.

Add 6 cups of the confectioner's sugar and the vanilla extract and beat, starting on low and moving up to high, until it is fully incorporated.

Scrape down the bowl and add the half and half. Beat to incorporate again.

Add another 2 cups of the confectioner's sugar and beat, starting on low and moving up to high, until fully incorporated. Check the consistency of the buttercream. If it needs to be thicker, add the remaining confectioner's sugar. If it is too thick, add more half and half a teaspoon at a time, beating after each addition, until it reaches the consistency you like.karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17666861136164521960noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2567338570541070393.post-89013079622637073022011-11-13T14:25:00.000-08:002011-11-13T14:26:05.100-08:00The Quilting Ranny is running again!I have a great giveaway blogsite that a friend in Washington state is doing for the holidays..

"Gunnar " comes across as a manly man, who takes on his personal problems with the help of Tessa, who I found a very down to earth, sincere and realistic personality in this very well written book.

The characters were easy to relate to, as was the situation from which the story is derived. The writing style, as I began reading was spell binding, more so in this book than many I have read recently. I found it easy to want to hurry up and read the next page, the next chapter, as each of the characters tugged at my heart, for their pain or for their strength.
In my experience, reading,it was hard to put down as I began to be drawn into the story line, as It shared the love, mercy and character of Jesus Christ without being too " in your face" or " preachy/churchy".

In the story, Gunnar and Tessa reach out to a pastor (Bob), for help much like ones I have known myself. Gunnar's hard life, his tatto's, and biker mentality that many in society might shy from ,seeks out answers to his troubled past - all because of Tessa, who for some reason is not afraid of he, or his past.. She devotes herself to having his back, as the saying goes, and she walks with Gunnar to the most important place that is availaible- to God. Gunnars heart, as Tessa seems to see it, is beautiful, gentle, and she embraces Gunnar, just as he is, much like the Lord embraces us - just as we are.

This book is a keeper.. its also a book I HIGHLY recommend to be passed onto others in life that could benefit from both a good read, and a powerful read - but more importantly, a book that will tug at your heart strings, without it being sappy.. Its a book of complete gentleness, and compassion, while encouraging one to see others outside the box, rather than whats on the outer skin - thus tattoo's, earrings, ect..
Looking forward to reading more of Dana Pratola's writing - very , very good at her craft!karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17666861136164521960noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2567338570541070393.post-86754244770728250182011-11-08T17:47:00.000-08:002011-11-08T17:47:58.170-08:00The Encounter..As part of the Booksneeze blogging program, I receive
books of my choosing from their list of availiable titles.. Upon reading the choice I make, I write a review, that can be positive, or negative, as long as it is my honest review of each book.
I have read other books, in passing from this author, and because of gleaning much encouragement from Mr. Arterburn's other books, I thought this one would be something similar, in his style of writing about such an important topic - Adoption.. Though written in the genre of fiction, I was excited to begin reading when it arrived in my mailbox.

Unfortunatly, I was a bit disappointed in the simplicity of the writing style he used. Thinking of such a personal experience, though fiction,to me the writing lacked the authenticity of a CEO of a successful company going to Alaska in order to seek answers to the questions of his adoption. I didn't get the emotional impact of various emotions I think would come up - rage, anger, sadness,or most importantly, the feeling of abandonment, and rejection that friends of mine who have been adopted have told me they have felt in their own lives.

I do see strength in this story however, as the message I got from his journey was the ability to see God, and His forgiveness while also acknowledging there is healing for those whose lives have been challenged as the character Jonathan Rush's had been.

The book was an easy book to read, although by the middle of reading it, it became almost predictable in the outcome .. I felt disappointed in that I could guess without a problem what was going to be the ending, but because I wanted to know how it ended from the author's mindset, I continued on to complete the read.
I especially appreciated the end of the book discussion/ questions for readers to use as possibly a personal study , or even a bible study for those who have walked in adoption journeys. The thoughts of the author shared in the contemplative questions reflected to me his professionalism in his line of work/ ministry - which, to me made his authenticity more credible in this fiction piece..

I would recommend it for a simple read, and a quick read - I don't think it is a powerful read, however - more along the lines of emotional tug of heart for those that might fall into the experience of being adopted.

And true to it's word, the block took me 10 minutes... once I took 20 minutes trying to figure out one section of the block, with only 3 seams.. Yep, as the tutorial shows, it was just 3 seams.. and when all said , and done, it took me LESS than 10 minutes once I figured out what I needed to do..
Will it be a quilt pattern I will do often? Probably not, though I know I will do more baby donation quilts using it, since it is easy, and fast.. But it was kind of boring , which for someone like me who needs challenges in my quilting projects, it won't be done often.. But it was fun learning.. Heres a little boys quilt top, using the pattern called, "10 Minute Block "..

karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17666861136164521960noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2567338570541070393.post-26516164455110026762011-10-20T18:33:00.000-07:002011-10-20T18:33:46.849-07:00Chicken at it's finest..Chicken Marsala
3 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves, cut in half horizontally into two thin cutlets
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
6 tablespoons butter, divided
1 tablespoon olive oil
8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1/2 cup Marsala wine
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
2 tablespoons or more freshly grated Parmesan

Preheat oven to 200 degrees.

Combine salt, pepper, paprika and flour on a plate and place near the cook top.

Heat 3 tablespoons of the butter and the olive oil in a large saute pan over medium-high heat until very hot. Dredge several chicken cutlets in the seasoned flour, shaking off excess and then add them to the pan, being careful not to crowd the pan. Saute until browned, turning after one or two minutes. Remove chicken to a plate when done and continue with remaining cutlets, until all have been cooked.

Sprinkle the lemon juice over the chicken and keep warm in a 200 degree oven.

Add remaining 3 tablespoons of butter to the pan over medium-high heat. Add mushrooms and season with salt and pepper. Saute until mushrooms are golden brown. Add the Marsala and cook over medium-high heat, stirring constantly, until the wine is reduced by half. Stir in the chopped parsley and return the chicken to the pan, turning once to coat. Transfer to a serving platter and top with the mushrooms and sauce and sprinkle with the Parmesan cheese.karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17666861136164521960noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2567338570541070393.post-82258329120016907522011-10-13T16:52:00.000-07:002011-10-13T16:52:33.611-07:00Chocolate Cake to die for..Not being able to sit still today, for some reason unknown to me, I ended up in the kitchen.. where Chocolate , usually not in my diet because I am not a fan of sweets OR chocolate usally, I ended up making from scratch, this German Chocolate Sour Cream Cake with Coconut Pecan Icing.. I dont know who will eat it, because .. I am not a fan of sweets.. Give me a chunk of hot sour dough bread fresh out of my oven with softned margarine ( notice I said margarine, and not real butter? I am on a diet, hehe ) and I am automatically put into food coma of delishiousness.
Anyway, here is the recipe for the sinfully delish, German Chocolate Cake.. I am part German, so it is my nature to create German delicasies.. NOT...

German Chocolate Cake with Coconut and Pecan Frosting
For the cake:

2 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups of granulated sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons of baking soda
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1 cup of butter (softened)
1 cup of sour cream
4 large eggs
4 ounces of sweet baking chocolate (melted)
1/2 cup of milk
3/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract

For the topping

3/4 cup of evaporated milk
1/2 cup of brown sugar
1/2 cup of butter
1 cup coconut (flaked)
1 cup pecans (chopped)

Instructions

To make the cake

First take a large bowl and combine the flour, sugar, salt, butter, baking soda, sour cream, milk, chocolate and vanilla in it.
Then beat the ingredients with a mixer until blended.
Now increase the mixer to high and beat for about 2 minutes longer.
Once that is done, use a spoon to put the batter into the 8-inch prepared pans.
Bake this in an oven that has been preheated to 350° for about 35 minutes or until a cake tester inserted in the center comes out clean.
Leave the cake out to become cold.

To make the topping

Take a saucepan with evaporated milk, brown sugar, and butter and place it over a medium flame.
When it comes to a boil, remove it from the heat.
Then put in the pecans and coconut.
Now set this mixture aside to cool at room temperature.

Once the cake is cool, place one layer on a cake platter and spoon half of the coconut mixture onto the layer. Use the remaining topping to top the remaining cake layer.karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17666861136164521960noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2567338570541070393.post-45856163444640578102011-10-05T15:09:00.000-07:002011-10-05T15:10:59.777-07:00Shadow in Serenity

Terri Blackstock's book, Shadow in Serenity . captured my interest when I was approached to give an honest review of her re-written fiction novel. Having been one of her loyal readers for many years now, I jumped at the chance to read another book, not even on book shelves.
I went into reading with no bias as to her writing, or her previous books - I wanted to know the Terri Blackstock before I knew her as a christian fiction writer - so it was a stepping out to see how her early days of writing compared to today.. After getting into the first few chapters, I realize there is not really much difference in her style, but there was it seemed like in the story line, and how it captured certain aspects of living for some people ..

Carny Sullivan, was a young mother, who has been on the conning end of cheating people, as was her family. She knew the streets well, and could spot a" fake "a mile ( or 200 ) away . Thus, when Logan Bristow, came calling in Serenity, Texas , and bumping into Carny, ex con artist, and beloved member of the town, something was bound to happen to expose this man as the con he was.. if she had anything to do about it.
The book centers around Bristow trying to dupe the trusting members of the tiny town into falling for his flamboyant charm, as he was trying to woo them into doing what he wanted at the expense of their bank accounts.
Carny didn't buy it, and never would - she was to much in the know about how he, and others like her family , operated, and she wanted to expose him for what he truly was, a con artist.

This is a story that Ms Blackstock wrote that captured love, and hardship.. It will draw the reader from the place of falling innocently for this con, but also to the place of Grace, as Carny takes you on a journey through love and how God can turn even the most conning life totally around.

Just like the question I asked myself when reading the book, I wondered how Carny would make Logan be seen as he truly was, and in the end, still be seen as a man willing to change, or be changed.. Shadow in Serenity was a very decent read, and one I would share with others who like clean Christian fiction, with a " moral to the story".. I didn't take long to read it once I got into the mindset of the characters, and I found myself interjecting even my own life at times into the person of Logan - because can't we all be con artists before God at times? though He knows when we do that?
I read this book without any problems, and knowing it was my honest review that is needed, I gladly give a 4 thumbs up in Terri Blackstock's penning it.karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17666861136164521960noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2567338570541070393.post-73961278205363482412011-09-30T16:09:00.000-07:002011-09-30T16:11:48.250-07:00Dear Carnita.. where have you been all my life?Ok, hands down , these are the best tacos around.. I was skeptical, I like my beef tacos.. Unfortunately, these are WAY better, and I will never look at tacos in the same way.. Just sayin', they are THAT good! And the raja's recipe at the bottom was perfect compliment! Nothing else was even needed for the tacos..
Carnita's ( Tacos )

Enjoy!

Ingredients

3 lbs boneless pork loin, cut into 1-inch pieces (or buy pre-cut pork stew meat)
3 large garlic cloves, minced
1 to 2 jalapeños, minced (optional)
1 teaspoon cumin
1 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
2 tablespoon olive oil
1/2 cup fresh orange juice
1/4 cup fresh lime juice
1 cup chicken stock

16 corn tortillas, warmed

Preheat oven to 325°F.

Toss pork with garlic, jalapeños, cumin, salt and pepper. In a large saucepan, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Add pork and cook, stirring frequently, until lightly browned on all sides, about 10 minutes.

Transfer to roasting pan and add orange juice, lime juice and chicken stock. Cover tightly (you don't want to lose the steam from a loose fitting lid) and place in oven for 2 to 2 1/2 hours, until meat is very tender. If juices cook out, add more chicken stock.

Allow pork to cool and absorb remaining juices. Shred meat with a fork.

To serve, pass warmed tortillas and allow each person to make their own tacos.
Basic Chile Poblano Rajas

You can use different peppers or seasonings but this is a good basic recipe, by Rick Bayless.

I N G R E D I E N T S
4 medium, fresh chiles poblanos, roasted and peeled ( I used canned whole green chiles, cut into strips )
1 1/2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 medium onion, sliced 1/4 inch thick
2 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
2/3 cup crema, whipping cream, or broth
1/2 teaspoon mixed dried herbs (thyme, Mexican oregano, marjoram)
2 bay leaves
1/2 teaspoon (to taste, adjust as needed if using broth with salt)

I N S T R U C T I O N S
Chiles: Stem and seed the roasted chiles. You can remove the veins if you want a more mild rajas. Slice the chiles crosswise into 1/4" strips.

Heat the oil in a heavy sauté pan over medium heat and fry the onions until they brown, about 7 -8 minutes. Stir in the garlic and chile strips, cook 2 minutes.

Add the cream or broth, herbs, and bay leaves and simmer until the liquid reduces enough to just coat the vegetables. Remove the bay leaves, taste and adjust salt as needed.karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17666861136164521960noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2567338570541070393.post-29557928664332821412011-09-30T13:14:00.000-07:002011-10-04T09:13:36.118-07:00Our Last Great Hope...In reading Ronnie Floyd's latest book, " One Last Great Hope",

I was both glad to read it, as I have read a few other books he has penned ,and enjoyed reading them. But at the same time, in this latest book, it just didn't quite meet the flavor if you will, of his previous books.

I have met the Pastor on several occasions, while visiting friends of mine who attend his very large church in Arkansas. I have enjoyed during those times, drawing wisdom, biblical knowledge, as well as encouragement in my own walk with Christ. I very much appreciate his desire to bring others to Christ, in Northwest Arkansas, and the world, as he often says .
However, this book, I have to honestly say , was not just about finding the reasons to share Christ with the world, but it was seeming to bring the man, Ronnie Floyd , in more of the equation than I am comfortable in reading. Don't get me wrong, his heart is to serve the Lord, and minister hope to the nations. But there just seemed to be to much " me " in his writing this time, and that made it very difficult for me this time to want to complete reading the entire book. I did that, yes, but honestly, it was hard..

I do find it very convicting in what he shares, and it has drawn my own thoughts closer to what is the real deal for the church as a whole. Do we sit in the same pews, waiting on others to share the Gospel, or do we get moving ourselves, and live out what the Great Commission is really about?

While I don't necessarily believe I can fully endorse this book as a " great read" , I can say it will in some ways, challenge the reader , to look beyond their comfort zones of spirituality, and think for themselves what it means to " Be Jesus" to those whose only hope is to see others living faithfully, and honestly for the Lord. Sometimes, it is US who is Jesus to those who won't step inside the church door - whether because of personal shame, and experiences in life that Christians shy away form , or from experiences INSIDE the church where the only thing they might see, or hear is about money, or the " me, me, me's " that often times pastors project from the pulpit.

For a book to inspire, or to sit and read as you would any other reading , then this is good for that. But for a deeper read, using more scriptural references, then I would have to honestly say, it is not a great read for study.. It just seemed to me, to be , another man's views of what he feels the world of believers needs to hear..this is not a bad thing.. it is an important part of what readers need to hear from true , and strong believers in the Lord Jesus Christ..open transparency about the faith they have, and why it is lived out in the every day world in which they take part in.

I decided to do what my passion calls, and that was to make Jenn a quilt, because that is my passion. I might not be THAT good at it, yet, or proficient at making perfect seams, and mitred corners, but one thing I am good at is loving to create out of scraps for someone special.. even if I have not met them in person, or if they are recipients of quilts for donations which I have done to various organizations.

Jenn, well she is my very DEAR friend, whom I laugh with sometimes, vent to sometimes, threaten a tear with,sometimes.. She is one that relates to me, and I relate to her.. She is my friend whose presence in my life has greatly encouraged me every time we talk..

This quilt is for her

She loves blues, greens, and I love purple, so using my favorite way of cleaning house, I did it in a scrappy technique.. I had an old flannel sheet with a hole in it, and cut that up into squares to use as my foundation block. I then turned a pretty shade of " green" as I went thru my scrap basket , pulling out all the shades that eventually made up this strip quilt. I hope she likes it.. well I know she does, since I already showed her a photo of it. lol.. good thing too, because I am not wanting to re-clean my sewing room by her giving back all those pretty little scraps making up the colorful blocks. Shes my friend, yes, but I don't want her scraps!karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17666861136164521960noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2567338570541070393.post-81611685213822627382011-09-30T10:07:00.000-07:002011-09-30T10:07:57.328-07:00Doing Well at Being Sick.. A book reviewIn reading the book, " Doing Well at Being Sick: Living with Chronic and Acute Illness", the author, Wendy Wallace , hit on topics that hit close to home , both medically, and emotionally in my own journey of living with physical hardship.
Questions that I have had many times , about how my day to day struggles with health issues can allow me to do things that bring me joy, and fun - when knowing that some days I am so wiped out, I can't do anything but bring frustration to those I might disappoint.
Wendy Wallace writes , from her own struggles, which are MANY, of what to do with that guilt that comes when having to disappoint, or burdening her own loved ones. This topic/ question is one that ANY who live with chronic illness of any kind, whether it is physical or emotional in nature can fully say " I feel that guilt , too. How do I get rid of it? "..
This book, written from half personal experience, and half scholastic, will bring those hurting, or their caregivers/ family/ friends a deeper awareness of how to embrace the trials that we have in a journey of illness. Though the book is written from a Christian standpoint, it is , however, a book that speaks deep to the heart of anyone, Christian or not.
It drew me, as a reader, into the practical, honest, and heart rendering view of how best to deal with struggles that I have struggled with in the past, and gives me hope, to deal with struggles in the future - and it is with encouragement in Ms Wallaces' transparency, that I know I will make it day to day, with the steps of personal growth that I have found in between the two covers of this book. A book, difficult in the reason it was written, but so easy to read by the writing ease that Wendy Wallaces' style of writing takes her reader on.
The book was provided to me through the publisher, Discover House for review. I am writing my own thoughts, as they are, as I am under no obligation to post only positive remarks.karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17666861136164521960noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2567338570541070393.post-84473395835463935552011-09-19T20:28:00.000-07:002011-09-19T20:43:08.674-07:00Sweet Hour of Prayer.. a journey in Song...In reviewing for Discovery House Publishers ( thank you Katy Pent) , the CD " Sweet Hour of Prayer" which included devotional readings from Oswald Chambers , author of " My Utmost for His Highest" ,and selections from hymns of old, I was led on a pilgrimage of spiritual lessons from the daily writings, and classical musical pieces of well known hymns such as:

Sweet Hour of Prayer
Take my Life and Let it Be
When Morning Gilds the Skies
and the favorite, I Need Thee Every Hour..and 9 other beloved hymns of the Christian faith.

Narration was quiet, gently flowing readings that led me to thinking about what Oswald Chambers was conveying in his writing. Not one to like "books on tape" for the fact they put me to sleep, I found myself both quieted in spirit, yet fully alive to wanting to be in the presence of God, as each song, complimented the entire CD. From gentle flowing musical selections, to powerful movement of the Holy Spirit in each writing, this CD, and it's contributors ,ministered great peace to my soul, even in the busyness of life.

Each reading selection, taken from the book I currently am using as a daily devotional, was shared with the listening audience, knowing that each one would be quick to listen to, yet powerful enough in it's presentation to remember, and think about the entire day. Because of my own personal time of reading the actual book, listening to the songs in the background just heightened the experience of the morning knowing I was being ministered to in a deeper way.

I will say, in all honesty, it would not be one I would choose to purchase on my own. I found myself day dreaming to the classical ensemble, because I like classical music - and as the premise of the CD was to me, a daily devotion, I found it hard to concentrate on the message of Oswald Chamber's writing.

This would be a very good devotional project for those that are home bound, and who would like music, as well as listening as a " book on tape" would be for their quiet time.karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17666861136164521960noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2567338570541070393.post-81303907231137807482011-09-15T21:15:00.000-07:002011-09-15T21:15:20.541-07:00One Call Away.. A Journey of Strength"One call away" , written by Brenda Warner, is a true-life story written from the heart of a woman, whose challenges in life , from a child with extraordinary needs, to the death of both parents by an act of nature, all show the true character of one woman who took life by the horns, and turned hardship into a personal success story.
This memoir, of Brenda Warner, mother, wife of well known NFL player, Kurt Warner, showed that even through devastating events in life, or challenging, and painful hardships in an earlier marriage, and subsequent divorce, her life by her choice, was willing to be rebuilt because of faith in God, and personal choice to live to the best of her ability. Brenda Warner showed true grit , just as the Marine attitude that began to be instilled in her since her high school years, as her story led me, as a reader, on her personal journey into healing, and personal ministry to many others who hurt as she once hurt.
This book made me feel as if my struggles in life are conquerable, and if I pull myself up by the same sorts of bootstraps that Brenda wore, I , too , can accomplish whatever my mind sets out do to, no matter the situations that life might present to me in that journey.
Brenda , as a down to earth, detailed, and straight forward writer, is clearly a strong woman, made stronger by her faith. God gave Brenda Warner a purpose and a plan, and as she walked by faith, and probably by a little guts thrown in, she earned her place of true Godly character, and to me, that kept me glued to the entire 354 pages of her journey..I was deeply humbled by her honesty written about sensitive matters, while at the same time, I was inspired , strengthened, and also greatly blessed and encouraged.
This is a book , in my opinion , not for those that want some light hand holding as you read. It is a book that will challenge even the one whose life is difficult , and painful, to see outside the box, and begin to work steps to accomplish your own dreams, even through challenges.. Ms Warner instills strength ( by her faith in God ) to those that believe their lives are not worth the fight - she instills courage, and grace , and that only can come from one who personally experienced the same..
I have read this free book, from the publisher through the BookSneeze®.com book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17666861136164521960noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2567338570541070393.post-19525052112408746462011-08-24T21:27:00.000-07:002011-08-24T21:32:12.568-07:00Broken Perfection..A Stained Glass AproachIn her latest book, Stained Glass Hearts, Patsy Clairmont shares the brokenness that has touched her life. Her sharing her own pain, though not in detail of various experiences, led me to find some glimpse of sunlight in my own struggles personally , for such a time as this.
I found it to be a book that took me, as a creative type, to places of exploration as I began seeing God's creation through music, art, and other forms of creativity.
As the subtitle caught my eye with this thought, " Seeing Life froma Broken Perspective", I felt that this book would touch on many things that most , or all of us, at one time or another, could relate to - being broken, wounded, or in pain.
Ms Clairmont takes her readers into her world of both struggles that she has felt, and experienced , while at the same time in each chapter ending, into the world of a better space - one filled with a perspective of joy in music, words of inspiration from the Word of God, artistry from different avenues of color, and inspiration that takes the sting out of life's sometimes, hardest journey.
This book , if you just give a passing glance to the title, and subtitle, would lead one to think it is a book of self help. That is what I first thought, and would have put it out of my mind, thinking " just another self help guru's interpretation of life".. However, reading the first few pages, and allowing myself to think outside the box, I began seeing in my own understanding of being broken, that there is joy in the outcome, and the outing of personal pain that we all feel inside..
Ms Clairmont takes us on a journey of her own experiences, and though they are not like mine, I found myself relating in many ways, and for that very fact, I am thankful I did not put the book aside when choosing it to review.
Would I share this book as a journey to encourage another friend, in their time of brokenness? No.. because it wasn't a book that I see is useful for helping.. It is more a book, in my humble opinion, to bless those who are in the healing process , as they begin to see joy in the experiences that being broken and beautiful , provide..
I have read one other from the author, and found it quite enjoyable, and suspenceful, and was hoping this was of the same caliber as her other one.

Fatal Judegement has plenty of drama, action and some romance thrown into the mix, and to some readers of her books, my opinion, though not all bad, is that it seemed a little predictory in knowing what was to come.. Her style of writing is engaging, yes, but I had found it to be almost TOO similar in the outcome of the book.

In Fatal Judgement, Jake Taylor, who is a U.S. Marshal, found himself assigned to protect a federal judgenamed, Liz Michaels. Liz , in the story , happened to be the widow of one of Jake's college good friends. And into reading the book, Liz's sister, we find out was murdered at Liz's house, and the police believe Liz may have been the actual target.

This book is turned into a very good read, with a combination of suspense with the murder investigation, as well as romance with the feelings that began to evolve with Jake and Liz. The murder details were not so graphic that readers who are squirmish about ' crime stories ' would shy away from finishing the book, and the romance isn't too sickening sweet, which does turn me away from most reading material. The Christian faith was, and is not preachy at all, in fact..even non Christians, in my thinking , would like this authors writing style.
A very good read... I recommend it, and though not required to post a postive review for www.ChristianReviewofBooks.com,
I give this a thumbs up, because it was a captivating story line.karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17666861136164521960noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2567338570541070393.post-75894730032933861282011-07-22T09:08:00.000-07:002011-07-26T16:37:14.388-07:00No Safe Haven.. A book Review"No Safe Haven," the first novel by mother/daughter writing team Kimberley and Kayla Woodhouse.

It is a work of christian fiction, but to me, an avid reader of suspence, I can easily see this book, and it's story line , turning into a movie worthy of the best suspence shown on screens today. Captivating, exciting, a bit sad in the fact that 12 year old , suffers from a medical condition so rare that not much is known about its someimes " deadly" outcome.

The story line takes Andie, and her mom, Jenna, and a pilot of a small plane on a collision course straight into an Alaskan mountainside, where people are waiting to kill them for reasons unknown until you dive further into the book.

Without radio or flight communication, they are unaware of a winter storm heading their way, and so the survival that is needed means trusting in Cole, stranger who was a late arriver on board the small plane, piloted by Hank, Jenna's late husbands, soldier friend, who ended up being no friend at all.

Exciting read, especially from a new mother/ daughter team .. Looking forward to possible more books from the Woodhouse gals, at least thats my hope -
At first I was going to delete it, as I usually do with email I am not sure about.. But for some reason, I did not do that, and I opened and read..

OK.. so it was from someone asking me to write a review on one of two CD selections that were availiable.. After reading about the two, I chose to review the music DC project called, " Stand UP - Big Band Praise".. As i read the email from the one to share it with me, I was hesitant about the Big Band Praise part.. I am not a huge big band era follower to be honest.

But Oh how I was surprised in listening as it arrived to my home not more than a week later. I first looked at some of the song choices below, and decided that it might be an interesting musical project to listen to.. and it was, yes, a pleasant surprised as I listened not only once, but twice in the very same day.

Just a Closer Walk with Thee
Forever
Hosanna ( Praise is Rising )
What a Friend we have in Jesus
Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho
Stand up, Stand Up for Jesus

From the very first song, " Just a Closer Walk ", I could not help but move .. It was if every fiber of my being was taken on a culinary musical ride as the promised " Big Band" swing took me right away to a place of wanting to praise in dance.

So with toes wiggling, body wiggling, and voice warbling ( not such a good singer :-( ) I sang along to the new, and the old praise songs of all time that were included in this CD project...

With every song, a different part of the big band musical instrumentation, from horns to other instruments all just seemed to flow nicely from song to song. Nothing seemed predictable to me in listening . It all was as if each song had it's own swing band orchestra, yet , in all the different types of songs that we all might know, and love, each performance was as if it was its very own Big Band leader. It was, and is a CD project that I am hoping there will be MORE OF..

I highly enjoyed this .. and for to recieve it free , just for listening to it from the comfort of my own home, and now permenant place in the car, I am most grateful that I have it in my repotoire of " fine Praise Music"..karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17666861136164521960noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2567338570541070393.post-31872013176745179062011-06-11T17:06:00.000-07:002011-06-13T08:52:21.683-07:00Plain Wisdom.. A book ReviewI found the book, "Plain Wisdom" to be a wonderful bit of insight into Old World Amish life versus the Englischer life . I felt like I was taken back to life's basics, including homemaking, homeschooling, and other areas of life that women today are interested in, even today.

Plain Wisdom, by Cindy Woodsmall and Miriam FLaud turned out to be a very simple read for me. I enjoyed getting to know both the authors ,as well the Amish way of life thru the pages of this book .
Miriam is " Old Order Amish "while Cindy is an Englischer . I think the success of this book is key to how they've enjoyed a close friendship for a number of years. Their lives, though different in beliefs, and customs are drawn into the readers heart as they deal with the same topics we all face in life, though they are handled differently. The same cares of life, the same worries, the same joys - but because of two customs, they are experienced in a different ' flavor' in the respective lifestyles.
Each chapter deals with an individual topic and both Cindy and Miriam wrote their own thoughts about the topics. This book is well written ,and gives good, solid advice, plus the unexpected thrill for me in yummy sounding recipes. A book that anyone would find helpful.
It not only kept me glued to my chair, but it kept me wondering, " whats next" in this second " Ray Quinn" mystery.

Ray Quinn, an ex homicide cop, turned Private detective, along with " Crevis", his partner, set out to look for another ex - cop , who also changed jobs, but this time as a security officer who bolted with very important ( and sensitive ! ) information.

While this book is not a book of comedy, I found myself , for some reason chuckling at the characters that Mynheir created to fill these pages.. Each one , I found endearing, charming, and exciting in their own roles within the cover of the book.

For the ex cop, Ray Quinn, a man who turned to " drink" to cure his woes, his fictionalized role seemed to grab my haert strings, as I soon began to see him as a " friend" whom I could relate to in his quest for finding the bad guy, Logan ramsey - the dirty cop we all hear about in other books of crime fiction.

I saw ,however, how the author used hard times that some sadly, find as an escape, ( Quinn's drinking problem )to weave a story of fiction, with that , but taking it to a new level in this well written ( and CLEAN ) " who dunnit" ,as the reader could envision hope, and redemption at the end of the journey.

A story WELL worth the read, as it will make you chuckle ( or at least it did me! ), make you find yourself cheering on the characters so well defined, that you will count them as your dearest friends.. Would I recommend this book, AND this author? Most certainly. I didn't realize that I have read Mark Mynheir before.. His writing is not completely different in style , as the one I read , but he carries some of the same powerful character definitions from book to book - meaning, he has the ability to draw you into the story, without realizing you are " there" ...
